[Contest] CactusVPN – P2P/BitTorrent PPTP VPN Packages [Forum Exclusive]

| July 25, 2012

CactusVPN is a 3-in-1 product. It provides you Open VPN, PPTP, L2TP/IP Sec protocols and Proxy features.

CactusVPN offers premium VPN services on their servers located in United States, United Kingdom and Netherlands. Moreover, they allow Torrents and P2P connections on Netherlands server.

You get Unlimited and unmetered bandwidth. Plus there is no logging, except for the connection logs for troubleshooting.

Their product is available to use on Windows OS (32/64 bit), Mac OS, iPhone, iPad, Android, Linux, and FreeBSD.

The backbone of the product is a VPN -Virtual Private Network. VPN provides a logical connection to high-speed Cactus servers in US, UK and NL over your ISP’s internet connection. Thereby, you obtain an European or American IP address on your computer, without physically being there. Moreover, all of your Internet traffic is encrypted (data is encrypted to 128 Bits) and tunneled to CactusVPN servers. Hence you can now easily bypass your ISP / country / geographical restrictions.

PS: TCP ports 22 and 25 are blocked by Cactus to avoid (spam) abuse.

You could try CactusVPN for 24hours by creating an account using the link below:

The trial package includes US, UK, NL VPN (PPTP, L2TP/IPsec and OpenVPN).

Manuals for VPN connection and Proxy settings could be accessed/downloaded as PDF from the link below:

Taking about real action.

The setup is 2.6Mb and installs as 3Mb on disk. Up on installation you see a window as shown below:

After you login, you could choose server and protocol.

Make sure you have added a new TAP-Win32 virtual ethernet adapter (which happens during setup) to be able to proceed further. Else you could come across the following error:

There are no TAP-Win32 adapters on this system.  You should be able to create a TAP-Win32 adapter by going to Start -> All Programs -> OpenVPN -> Add a new TAP-Win32 virtual ethernet adapter.

I’m currently in India so Hulu videos are not accessible to me. Therefore, I used CactusVPN’s L2TP protocol to connect to their US server. Using the same I was able to access Hulu videos. I’m on a 1Mbps wireless connection, but even then I did not notice any jitter or breaks in the video. It went pretty smooth. See below

Next thing I tried was the OpenVPN to US server. The connection went pretty smooth and now I got an US IP. The benefit of VPN (over other IP hiding/ anonymous software’s) is that there is no proxy in between, and you now have a direct US IP address. See below:

As you could see from above whatismyip did not detect any proxy. This is the best part of VPN. Moreover, many forums and some social networking sites do now allow registration/login using a proxy.

Please note that you may experience a little bit of slowness when using OpenVPN compared to PPTP or L2TP/IPsec connections because OpenVPN uses strong encryption.

I was unable to connect using PPTP protocol and therefore have raised a support ticket. Got a response from them within 24 hours and replied back.

CactusVPN account is not linked with a particular device, so you can use it on multiple devices (your home computer, laptop, office computer, tablet, phone etc.), but there is a restriction on using it simultaneously on few devices – you can connect to one server only one device. Let’s say you have “US, UK, NL VPN” package. In this case you can connect your desktop to NL server to download torrents, your tablet to UK server to watch BBC and your phone to US server to listen to local radio.

  1. Simple setup and easy to use.
  2. High speed connectivity unlike other VPN providers.

  6. Easy access to blocked sites and apps such as Hulu, Pandora, ABC, NBC, BBC iPlayer, ITV, Vimeo.
  7. Ability to set log debug level (from 1 to 5) for easy troubleshooting.
  8. It supports various OS and devices such as Windows OS (32/64 bit), Mac OS, iPhone, iPad, Android, Linux, and FreeBSD.
