The Need:

Every software installed on your system comes with their own uninstaller. Most of these software’s make changes deep into Windows folders, settings and registry. Only a handful of the uninstallers remove the program completely-without leaving debris all over windows. Over the period of time we are left with a wounded and tortured operating system. Here comes Total Uninstall to our aid. It does a much smarter job of doing a clean and complete uninstallation of the software. It ensures that all traces of unwanted programs are removed.

License Information

Total Uninstall has been there in the market for a long time. It is a must alternative to the default uninstaller built in Windows. It comes in two editions: Professional and Standard. While the Standard edition comes for $29.95, the Professional edition costs $39.95. All licenses are perpetual, that is, you can keep using the product forever once you have purchased. Also free updates or upgrades are available for one year from purchase date.

A trimmed 30 days trial is available to do a test run from link below:

Below table shows the comparison of features between Trial, Standard and Professional editions

Application Interface

The interface is very clean and easy to use. It has 3 modules: Installed programs, Monitored programs and Cleaner. Below snap is for Installed programs, wherein on the left-hand-side (LHS) I have selected one of the installed programs. For the same on the right-hand-side (RHS) I could select from the options Summary or Changes. The below snap shows Summary.

Also you can select to see the Changes, as shown below. You can also select the type of view for the Changes. It shows very exhaustive details and nothing is left hidden from Total Uninstall.

The Monitored programs module lists all those applications which were installed with Total Uninstall.

The Cleaner module scans and provides a summary of items which can be deleted. Another snap below:

Analysis Profiles

The analysis engine of Total Uninstall provides three different profiles- Safe, Normal and Advanced. These profiles vary with respect to the information they provide on a specific piece of software installed on your system. The Safe option produces least false positives, while the Advanced produced the most – as it does a very extensive scan.

The Normal profile sits in between the two providing a more in-depth look up compared to Safe profile. It is the best compromise between the safety and detection rate of the installation items. This profile is the default.

The Advanced analysis profile is the best for an advanced user and it gives better results. However, it is not recommended for a “blind” uninstall.

Application Usage Scenario

Total Uninstall can be used in one of the below listed two ways.

A. The first option is to use Total Uninstall to remove software’s which are already installed on your system. It will analyze the installed program(s) and determine the best way to go about removing them.

B. The second option is to use Total Uninstall to monitor the software installations (Monitored Programs module). If you do this, the program is able to keep a log file of all the changes made by the installed software. This comes very handy while removing the software completely, leaving your system free of any debris. Also, this option ensures that only software-specific changes are logged and removed, causing no side-effect.

Application put to Test – Uninstall

I went ahead with the uninstallation of BlackBerry Desktop Software 7.1 software. It provides an option to choose from below 2 available uninstall profiles. I went ahead with Uninstall analyzed program profile.

· Uninstall analyzed program – launch first the provided uninstaller and continue to uninstall the left behind items.

· Use only the program’s uninstaller – will only launch first the provided uninstaller. It is equivalent with standard Add/Remove programs.

Below is the snap of above Uninstall log Summary:

Following are the typical Uninstall actions performed by Total Uninstall:

  1. A system restore point is created
  2. A backup copy is created for the uninstalled program
  3. The uninstaller that comes with the installed program is started and will wait for it to finish the standard uninstall procedure
  4. Reboot your computer if it is required. Total Uninstall will start with Windows to continue the uninstall process.
  5. Once the standard uninstall procedure is finished with success or not the Total Uninstall uses the install log to uninstall the left behind changes. At the end of the uninstall process the uninstall log is displayed.

Application put to Test – Restore

It was now time to test if the restore of the above uninstalled application was successful. From “Restore program” feature shown below I went ahead with restoration.

See Proof below where the Installed Date is changed to today’s date. Compare the same with the Summary screenshot above where it had Installed Date of 11/7/2012.

Application Options

The ‘Options’ allow you to configure the analysis and uninstall profiles, create and edit scanning and comparing profiles; and all this in details. It also includes a system restore function and a feature that allows you to compare system snapshots and view the differences.

1. After an un-monitored software is uninstalled using “Use only the program’s uninstaller” profile, the Installed programs list does not gets updated even after doing a refresh from View-Refresh. It requires closing the Total Uninstall application to update the list.
