As a rule of thumb software packages generally fall into distinct categories,
- The heavyweight commercial products from the industry leaders.
- The more economical packages from shareware and budget software suppliers.
- Free video editing as usually supplied by your choice of operating system.
Gilisoft Movie DVD Creator V5.0.0 falls neatly into the second category with a price of $39.95 as quoted on their website. The program is available as an evaluation version directly from their website at http://gilisoft.com/downloads.htm
N.B. IE 9 users may see their ‘’Smartscreen filter’’ utility flag up this software on download completion as undesirable during scanning noting that this program is not commonly downloaded and could harm your computer. I found this to be a false positive and no harm was caused when the program installed.
The program fully supports Intel® Pentium D Dual-Core Processors and AMD Athlon™ 64X2 Dual-Core Processors
XP/Vista/Windows 7/8 (32&64)
On running the program you are presented with the following screen -:
Most buttons are greyed out at the start apart from the ‘’add files’’ icon found in the top left corner. Clicking here allows stored video clips to be inserted into your project.
Supported files are-:
AVI, MP4, MPG, MPEG, 3GP, WMV, ASF, RM, RMVB, DAT and MOV.
High Definition are-:
MTS, M2TS(AVCHD H.264), TS(MPEG-2), HD MKV(H.264, MPEG-2 HD), HD WMV(VC-1), and HD MOV(H.264, MPEG-4).
Once the desired files have been entered you can adjust the settings to your taste and requirements. The timeline editing of the clip can now be done, cutting unwanted scenes from the clip, cropping the screen size, editing effect, with brightness, contrast and saturation, the addition of a watermark if needed, adding subtitles which opens a separate window facilitating placing and font options. The clip may also be rotated.
The dvd menu which can be created is ‘’Static menu’’, ‘’Dynamic menu’’ or ‘’No menu’’ These options can be edited from the underlined ‘’edit dvd Menu’’ text which highlights to red when clicked. The number of clips is limited only by dvd size. Options are available to change the predefined background picture or your own, your choice of menu music and the title. Colour may be edited as you wish. The television System ‘’standard’’ choice is made on this screen choosing between NTSC and PAL and screen aspect size from 16:9 or 4:3.
Still using the same window the output options can be edited, the volume label of the dvd, size of dvd disc, (standard dvd 5 / dvd 9) or compression if the clip size is large. The output may also be saved as an iso file to your hard drive, an output folder for the file needs to be made, use ‘’create dvd folder’’. The write speed of your dvd may also be chosen from the drop down box. If the temp file location isn’t entered the process will return a failure
Multiple output options:
There are DVD disc, DVD folder and ISO files to choose from;
Support all popular recordable disc types: DVD–5 and DVD–9; DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD+R DL, DVD-R DL, DVD-RAM.
The program is relatively easy to use even for beginners with a limited knowledge of video editing, the vendors don’t supply a help file with the program, but do have a ‘’how to use’’ page on their website. To recap, the program is easy and enjoyable to use, not overly complicated and user friendly. It produces good quality video for the inexperienced user with the minimum of fuss and generally does what it says on the tin.
